Prof. Dr. C. Sebastian Sommer, head of the German LIMES Commission, professor of Bamberg University, chief-conservator of the Bavarian Monuments Authority, will be holding a conference on March 11, in Cluj, called ‘Expanding the UNESCO-WHS: Frontiers of the Roman Empire’. The conference, organized by the National Museum of Transylvanian History, will be held from 16:00, at Croitorilor Tower (str. Baba Novac no. 35). As announced by the organizers, the lecture of Prof. Dr. C. Sebastian Sommer will focus on different case studies, being presented in detail the current situation of Roman archaeological sites that make up the Roman frontier in Germany, focusing on presenting the history and structure of the current system of promotion and management of the Roman frontiers.
The advantages of modern methods of detailed analysis of large areas of land will be discussed and also the manner in which monuments in Germany were included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.‘The actuality of the subject is to the advantage of Romania, in whose territory the monuments are similar to those in Germany, Roman Dacia’s border being practically the longest sector of limes (border line) in Europe, more than 1000 km. Recently, The LIMES Commission of Romania was established, which will assume the coordinating role of research and documentation on the Dacian limes, with the purpose of its inclusion on the national list and then UNESCO lists. This depends, however, on the common strategy of the nine European countries that have on their territory Roman border portions (England, Holland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania) and prof. Sommer is best placed to present recent work in this direction, being the group leader for the communication to the members of ICOMOS and UNESCO on this project, therefore the plan to convince the committee that it should be included on the lists other portions of the border concerns us directly. Undoubtedly, the ultimate goal of documenting monuments of Dacia is to put them into value for the benefit of the general public "- was stated in a press release by the MNIT on Monday’.
